Sterling Insurance Group led a Sexual Harassment in the Workplace course at the Association of Michigan CPAs (MICPA) CPE Mega Conference on Wednesday, May 23.
Sterling Insurance Group’s Senior Vice President and Commercial Insurance Producer, Andrew Turnbull, presented the course from an insurance-focused, and risk management-centric perspective.
“Whether harasser thinks he or she is guilty or innocent – it just doesn’t matter,” said Turnbull.
“All claims, complaints and allegations of harassment must be taken seriously by employers,” said Turnbull.
Turnbull went on to offer tips on conducting investigations and putting a strong, anti-harassment policy in-place to help mitigate risk for employers and employees alike.
“In this highly-sensitive climate, it’s not a matter of if an employee will file a complaint at your place of work. It’s a matter of when,” said Turnbull.
Turnbull went on to add that having a strong anti-harassment policy in-place can potentially save companies millions if a claim is ever made about an employee. Additionally, seeing strong policies carried out could cause a shift in workplace culture away from harassment.
The day-long conference was held at Macomb Community College. More than 50 CPAs attended the course. The course gave Continued Education to CPAs in attendance.
